The 10 Biggest Snubs, Surprises and Subplots of the 69th Golden Globes Nominations

Still reeling from this week’s installment of Oscar index, Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics has had a rare Thursday open for business. Blame the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the shadowy swag goblins behind today’s predictably headscratching slate of snubs, surprises and subplots also known as the 69th Golden Globe nominations. So far the Institute has chosen 10 worth investigating, but feel free to weigh in with your own as well: SUBPLOT: Is The Ides of March for real? George Clooney’s fine political drama bowed strongly but perhaps prematurely in the awards race, eventually ceding its early front-runner terrain to the likes of The Help and Hugo. (I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence.) Its dormancy extended through virtually every awards announcement before today, when it collected four nominations, including Best Picture - Drama, Best Director, Best Actor - Drama (Ryan Gosling), and Best Screenplay. What are we to think, and how much influence do we really want to ascribe to a pliant, star-fucking awards bloc that added an extra nomination in the Drama category just to make sure its bases were covered? I still think it’s toast overall — not enough first-place votes to sneak it into the Academy’s Best Picture consciousness, and it doesn’t stand a chance going up against Fox Searchlight’s Tree of Life campaign. “But,” one may ask, “where’s Tree of Life at the Globes?” Easy: Brad Pitt is at the Moneyball table, and Jessica Chastain is at The Help table. That’s all the HFPA cares about. The Academy has slightly different standards — but only slightly. So we’ll see. SNUB: Melissa McCarthy The Bridesmaids scene-stealer’s omission wouldn’t seem so conspicuous were it not for her surge over the last week and the film itself earning two nominations in Best Picture - Musical/Comedy and Actress - Musical/Comedy. I can’t even legitimately float the thought that NBC — which broadcasts the Globes — pushed for recognition of its SNL star over CBS’s Mike and Molly star; after all, NBC Universal released Bridesmaids. What’s an awards conspiracy theorist to do? Anyway, Academy tastes will settle this in a month, and I for one can totally wait. SUBPLOT: The Weinstein Factor On the one hand, TWC led all individual distributors with 12 nominations; Harvey took full advantage of the split categories in Picture and Actress, moving Michelle Williams in for the Musical/Comedy kill. That’s ridiculous by any standard but the HFPA’s and, well, Harvey’s. But at the end of the day, when Williams wins, it’s only small print on the DVD box. On the other hand… SUBPLOT: The Sony Factor Particularly apropos of Ides, I’m just going to throw this stat out there for your consideration of how Golden Globes sausage is made: Sony subsidiaries — including Columbia Pictures and Sony Classics — combined for 22 out of 71 nominations on the film side. Think about it: Almost every third nominee — 31 percent — is a Sony product, or at least one acquired and branded by Sony. Do what you will with that. SNUB: Uggie What has four legs, 2,000 supporters and apparently can’t be budged — even by Harvey Weinstein? [Insert a long, lusty “BOOOOOO” here.] SURPRISE: Ryan Gosling You know what? I think it’s great that Gosling got in for Crazy Stupid Love. That’s what the Musical/Comedy category is there for (even if technically he’s supporting Steve Carell, but that’s the last objection I’m going to raise to this crop of nominees), and he and Emma Stone arguably account for the entire soul of that movie. Good luck, Gos! That said, why ya gotta go all ninja-like on… SNUB: Gary Oldman Brutal. Absolutely brutal. But despite incredible early critical and commercial interest, the guy can’t buy a break at the Critics Choice Awards, the Globes, or even with his own freaking union. And while I don’t see Gosling carrying his Ides citation over to the Academy, Oldman still has Michael Shannon and Demián Bichir to fight off for the fifth slot. It could happen, but as downswings go, this is pretty bad. I mean, even Woody Harrelson got to plug Rampart this morning during the nominations announcement. SUBPLOT: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Finished Maybe there’s something I’m missing about The Daldry, but to expand the Best Picture - Drama category and not include this seems like a sizable red flag. In any case, it’s a serious statistical disadvantage: The only film to win the Oscar for Best Picture without even being nominated for the Golden Globes’ Best Picture - Drama award was Crash in 2006. (The Sting did it without a Musical/Comedy nod back in 1974.) Simply drawing a Best Picture Oscar nomination under such circumstances is a little easier, but not much: Milk did it in 2009, preceded by Lost in Translation in 2004, and then The Sixth Sense in 2000. Not good. SNUB: Nick Nolte This is probably the Globes snub with the least likelihood of reflecting in the Oscar nominations: Nolte’s SAG recognition should even out Mortensen’s mysterious Sony bump soon enough. No offense to Viggo, either, who’s one of the few bright spots of A Dangerous Method; I just have a feeling that his nomination here will just rally Team Nolte. SURPRISE: Rooney Mara Yay! Someone was listening! Or maybe the HFPA is just fundamentally opposed to nominating an Olsen. It’s not like Mary-Kate or Ashley ever made the cut, right? Coincidence? OK, don’t answer that. MTV's #8 Movie Of The Season Is '50/50'

I stored fearing "50/50" would have a left turn onto Sappy Boulevard, plod past Preachy Junction and are available to some relaxation inside a town populated by "Dying Youthful," "Fall in NY" and "Sweet November," where everybody discovers pat training and becomes better people (aside from individuals who die individuals unfortunate folks just allow us to learn something about ourselves before they pass in to the Great Cheesy Beyond). "50/50" is really a movie about cancer, in the end, in regards to a youthful guy using the disease. In a certain point star Seth Rogen would need to cease being Seth Rogen, and also the whole film would become some YA version of "Beaches," right? Wrong, wrong, wrong. According to author Will Reiser's own encounters and starring Frederick Gordon-Levitt like a youthful radio producer struggling with an uncommon type of cancer, "50/50" pulls from the miracle trick of remaining consistently funny, sweet, affecting and real and not, ever cheesy. For those these reasons and much more, "50/50" lands at #8 on MTV's Better of 2011 Movie list. As Rogen, who created the film and plays Gordon-Levitt's closest friend (and is actually Reiser's close friend), told us in September, "We'd always discuss what it is not really a creative challenge to consider something depressing making something depressing from it. To us, it had been a lot more interesting to consider something that's naturally depressing and then try to make something really, really funny from it.Inch "50/50" joins "Attack the Block" (#10) and "The Descendants" (#9) on good of 2011 list. All week lengthy, we'll be counting lower our list within the run up to good of 2011 Movies live stream on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET. Throughout the show, we'll revel the very best five. Don't miss it! On Borrowed Time

A Screen Australia, Screen New South Wales presentation of a Frontline Films production, in association with Australian Broadcasting Corp. (International sales: Frontline Films, Wilsons Creek.) Produced by David Bradbury. Executive producer, Jeni McMahon. Directed by David Bradbury. Written by Bradbury, Mike Rubbo. With: Paul Cox, David Wenham, Gosia Dobrowolska, Philip Adams, Bob Ellis, Julia Blake, Terry Norris, Tony Llewllyn-Jones, David Stratton, John Clarke, Chris Haywood, Aden Young, Wendy Hughes, Bob Jones. Narrator: David Wenham.A premature eulogy turns into an engaging celebration of Euro-flavored, Oz-based vet auteur Paul Cox in "On Borrowed Time." Helmed by Oscar-nominated documentarian David Bradbury ("Frontline," "Nicaragua: No Parasan"), pic captures both the charmer and the curmudgeon behind the camera while portraying Cox's wait for a liver transplant. Multiple collaborators testify to the film-maker's genius, while clips of everything from "Man of Flowers" to "Innocence" catch the arty essence of his work. A natural setup for Cox retrospectives or Oz sidebars, the docu is guaranteed fest-circuit berths. Pubcasters will also want a look. Pic begins with a withered Cox writing a memoir to pass the time while he waits for someone else with his rare blood type to die and donate his or her liver. With a frank, clear-eyed calm about his cancer, the Dutch-raised septuagenarian helmer cuts a dignified figure as he reflects on his past and his impending death. Tracking his subject's visits to a Melbourne hospital for treatment over several months, Bradbury unobtrusively augments the medical waiting game with celebratory interviews. Loyal thesps and regular players, including Wendy Hughes, Chris Haywood and longtime muse Gosia Dobrowolska, all marvel at the collision of order and chaos that characterizes Cox's shoots. Recollections focus more on the man rather than on his work, though high-quality productions from the director's 1980s heyday, including searing film a clef "My First Wife," are prominent. An appetizing array of clips nails the emotional intensity, trippy experimentation and austere beauty of Cox's capital-A arthouse features. Docu gets beyond pure hagiography with affectionate glimpses of Cox's cantankerous side. The gist of the auteur's personality is summed up by his onetime producer Philip Adams ("Lonely Hearts"), who recalls that the director spoke of "integrity" as if he was the only person who had it. Cox's sole big-budget film, "Molokai," featuring David Wenham (who narrates the docu) alongside Peter O'Toole and Kris Kristofferson, is dismissed as a debacle ruined by philistine producers. But the docu also uncovers the director's hypersensitivity to criticism; longtime Cox supporter and former Variety critic David Stratton relates the fiery response he got after filing a negative review of "Salvation," while thesp Aden Young (who edited "Salvation") laughs about being physically attacked by Cox when the two had a disagreement while working on 1994's "Exile." Bradbury's contemplative views of Cox's Melbourne milieu capture the city's gritty appeal and successfully mimic the helmer's Euro-styled eye. A 60-minute tube version is ready for Oz broadcast, but the pleasurable 87-minute length already seems too short.Camera (color, HD), Bradbury; editors, Lindi Harrison, Andrew Arestides; music, David Lewis; art director, Allan Moore; sound, Bradbury. 'Immortals' to check the B.O. gods

Relativity Media has something to prove a few days ago as Ryan Kavanaugh's newbie distrib launches its first large-budget homegrown worldwide release, three dimensional effort "Immortals," right into a depressed domestic market -- particularly because the under-25 auds the swords-and-sandals epic is relationship have lately remained from theaters. The film bows today at 3,112 Stateside locations, which about 70% have been in three dimensional, by having an additional 31 day-and-date worldwide marketplaces via local distribs. Also bowing Stateside are Sony's Adam Sandler PG-ranked "Jack and Jill," at 3,438 playdates, while Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" goes wide at 1,910 locations. Warner Bros. released the pic limited on Wednesday, generating $52,645 from seven locations in NY, L.A., Bay Area, Chicago and Washington, D.C."Immortals" is anticipated to win the weekend with a few $25 million, adopted carefully by third-week holdover "Puss in Boots" and "Jack and Jill," both monitoring within the low-$20 millions. While bizzers eagerly anticipate B.O. outcomes of Relativity's first inhouse blockbuster, Kavanaugh, who spoke Tuesday at Variety's Way forward for Film Summit, strongly stated that box office makes up about merely a small part of a film's profitability: "The practical the truth is -- box office is 20% from the cake, and it is somewhat irrelevant.""Immortals" will test that theory.Relativity is uncovered for $75 million from the film's near-$90 million budget, after tax savings and foreign pre-sales, by having an roughly $35 million P&A spend that's shared by marketing partner Virgin Created. The studio stated it's certain that a $25 million opening would place the film on the right track to go into the black.Even when "Immortals" cumes $75 million locally -- an positive three-occasions multiple, because of the holiday play period -- Relativity still shares half the B.O. with participants. Ancillary profits, together with a Netflix deal, can help raise the pic's main point here, though bizzers wonder if it will likely be enough.Pic should attract worldwide auds, but Relativity's business m.o. of pre-selling foreign privileges may prevent it from enjoying much from the potential overseas bonanza. And domestic B.O. conditions happen to be sluggish recently, particularly with under-25 auds not striking the plexes.PG-ranked "Jack and Jill," allocated in a reported $80 million, should attract a mostly family aud, in addition to fans of Sandler. Pic will compete for families with "Puss," that could see a small amount of around 35% in the third frame. "Puss in Boots" may hold much better than that, however, thinking about the toon's greatly impressive 3% drop a week ago.Warner's "J. Pauline Kael: A Existence at nighttime: The Review

For any film critic, it's a brand new sensation to see a biography of some other film critic. I don't believe there's have you been one before, a minimum of in British (James Agee doesn't count, because of the wide-varying character of his career). Generally, experts of any type don't lead particularly adventuresome lives they're reactors a lot more than stars, authors recognized for their opinions of others' work instead of getting produced anything that belongs to them.our editor recommendsHow Pauline Kael Might Election: No on 'Social Network,' Maybe on 'Black Swan'Pauline Kael's Editor: 'She'd Laugh at 'Black Swan,' Election for 'The Fighter' PHOTOS: Netflix's 10 Most-Leased Movies ever But although it's possible to regard the subtitle of Pauline Kael: A Existence at nighttime as subtly snide, author John Kellow strongly indicates that Pauline, as she was known as by everybody and it is almost always known to during these pages, resided most intensely inside a dim theater. Like a film critic for that NYer from 1967 to 1991, she taken care of immediately movies by having an unmediated emotion which was possibly absent from her personal existence (she's never referred to as getting been deeply in love with anybody after college), and her responses can also be physical one friend swears Pauline levitated at one screening, and her companion finally Tango in Paris, about which she authored her most well-known review, stated she was "drenched" after, not able to speak. PHOTOS: 10 Big Babies: Movies That Entered the ten-Figure Mark Pauline is extremely fortunate in her own biographer. Kellow, an erudite movie lover, features editor at Opera News and author of the book about another formidable lady, Ethel Merman, creates superbly and dexterously interweaves the storyline of the career lengthy-turned away having a sensitive reading through of his subject's youthful enthusiasm and intellectual growth. For an impressive degree, he will get within the mind of the precocious, fearsomely wise youthful lady from small-town California and has the capacity to describe what drove her, which authors switched her on (James, Hawthorne, Dostoyevsky, Melville, Woolf, Proust), her passion for jazz and her distaste for aesthetic, religious and political dogma. So completely does he portray the introduction of Pauline's character and passionate engagement with matters aesthetic it may come as no real surprise she could burst to the scene, in the relatively advanced chronilogical age of 48, among the most dynamic cultural arbiters of history century. PHOTOS: 'The Avengers': New Photos From Marvel's Super hero Film Even going to close buddies, Pauline revealed little about her early family existence. Many didn't know she was Jewish, therefore it's fascinating to understand that her home town of Petaluma, a chicken-farming community 35 miles north of Bay Area, would be a hotbed from the Labor Zionist movement and Progressive-era left-wing politics when she would be a young girl in early 20's. Growing up she was submerged in an enormous amount of literature, issues and argument and continued to be so her entire existence. The youngest of 5 kids of Polish emigres, Pauline couldn't stand her mother but admired her father, a self-confident ladies' guy she once compared to Paul Newman's Hud, which supplies plausible understanding of her later attraction to macho Westerners like Mike Peckinpah and Robert Altman. At college at Berkeley, she ongoing to see ravenously and was fatally drawn to poets, vibrant and sensitive teenagers who have been basically gay but either less than prepared to be honest or prepared to try the choice with Pauline. These fraught associations never exercised, but using these guys, Robert Horan, she gone to live in NY in 1941. Within days, Horan grew to become the stored guy of famous composers Samuel Barber and Gian Carlo Menotti, departing a broke Pauline to scramble for work and accommodations. Battling even while, she spent the war years creating a pronounced and permanent aversion to "NY artistic circles" and also the posting area she so acutely wanted to go in, populated because it was by shiny blond Cruz and Wellesley graduates willing to dedicate yourself $25 per week. Coming back towards the San Francisco Bay Area together with her tail between her legs in 1945, Pauline grew to become associated with the incredibly effeminate avant-garde filmmaker James Broughton. He handled to impregnate Pauline but put her out the moment she told him, whereupon she gone to live in Santa Barbara to provide birth to her daughter, Gina, in 1948 and silently raise her for some time. For anybody thinking about Pauline, the intellectual climate from the period and also the slim prospects for ultra-wise and ambitious youthful women of times, Kellow's account of those early years creates fascinating reading through. The writer has the capacity to document Pauline's youthful style of movies and stars -- she loved I'm a Fugitive From the Chain Gang, Grand Illusion, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck and also the Ritz Siblings but resented The Grapes of Wrath, Mrs. Miniver, Chaplin and Norma Shearer. She also began following film experts, becoming a fan of Agee, Graham Greene, Manny Farber and Otis Ferguson while creating a strong aversion to "saphead" Bosley Crowther from the NY Occasions. Finally, within the nineteen fifties, Pauline started to create a little of traction like a critical voice in small magazines, being an delinquent film critic on Berkeley's KPFA-FM by writing program notes for that city's pioneering twin art house, the Cinema Guild, run by Erectile dysfunction Landberg, an online, difficult guy to whom she was married for around annually. Resident Evil 5's Undead Will Ride Motorcycles and Shoot Guns

Deep thought of the day: They say if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck. But if an undead creature rides motorbikes and shoots guns, is it still a zombie? If you’re Paul W.S. Anderson pulling together Resident Evil 5, the latest in your megahit zombie franchise, the answer seems to be yes. Speaking with Collider, Anderson confirmed that he’ll tap into the Las Plagas virus storyline for Resident Evil: Retribution, which begins filming this month in Toronto and will also shoot in Tokyo and Moscow. “We’re bringing in the Las Plagas parasite,” he said, “which I love because it allows the undead to basically run around, ride motorbikes, and shoot machine guns, which no one’s done before.” Yeah, you know why no one’s done that before? BECAUSE ZOMBIES DON’T RIDE MOTORBIKES AND SHOOT MACHINE GUNS. To be fair, the Las Plagas virus, which takes over the bodies of living things, is really a parasitic organism that gives its victims heightened strength and coordination, not to mention a collective hive brain-type control mechanism. And it comes straight from the video games, which means Anderson’s only being faithful to the Capcom canon. It’s fitting that as the Resident Evil franchise evolves from horror to action property (anchored by Milla Jovovich) that so, too does the definition of zombie undergo its own transformation. These aren’t really zombies anymore — and they sure aren’t the ambling, mindless walking dead of classic horror lore. Can we still technically call this a zombie franchise? Fans, meanwhile, should be pleased at the lengths to which Anderson is going to satisfy them; he’s introducing three familiar characters from the game series into the new sequel: Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, and Barry Burton. So far only Johann Urb has been cast as Kennedy, joining returning series veterans Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe, Colin Salmon, and Michelle Rodriguez. Director Paul W.S. Gun Van Sant on Restless, Test-Screening Nightmares and Why He Went Out For Breaking Dawn

After bookending the summer with prestigious appearances at festivals in Cannes and Toronto, acclaimed auteur Gus Van Sant brings his latest film, Restless, to theaters this weekend in limited release. The outcome of an unusual creative collaboration including co-producers Ron Howard and his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, her former NY University colleague and screenwriter Jason Lew, and the visionary for hire Van Sant, Restless stars Mia Wasikowska as a terminally ill teenager who sparks up a star-crossed love affair with a gloomy, funeral-crashing, imaginary friend-confiding orphan (played by Henry Hopper). The two-time Oscar-nominated director sat down with Movieline this week to discuss Restless’s festival reception, the one-size-fits-all perils of test screenings, the 20th anniversary of his classic My Own Private Idaho, and what he was thinking when throwing his name in the hat to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. You were up in Toronto with this, and you met a NY audience the other night. What’s your sense of how viewers are receiving Restless? It seems really positive. I’m pretty happy. Do you actually like this part of the process? The exchange with the audience? No, I don’t. But I know they do, so that’s nice. Do test screenings or what audiences say in general ever influence you? Yeah. I mean, I totally take advice for the audience, but sometimes the test is not just for advice. It might also be for approval. The tests have different ways you can count up the scores. It asks you, “Do you like the lead character? Who’s your favorite character? Would you tell a friend about it? Would you rate it excellent, good, fair, poor?” There’s a way to count those up so you get a score, but it’s a score based on these arbitrary questions; the score is different than the other part of the test, like, “Are there any scenes that were too slow? Are there any scenes that are too fast? How did you like the ending? Did it begin too slow?” Questions about pacing, communication and so forth. Those can be one thing. But there can also be this concern about the overall adding of the score, because then it becomes more like a grade on a paper in high school or college ow wherever. So you want it to be A+. And a 90 is an A-, a 95 is an A, a 99 is an A+. And an 85 is a B, and a 75 is a C. So you want it to be 90. Do you remember the highest grade you ever got? Yeah. I’ve gotten in the 90s like… three times? What’s the lowest you ever got? 33. 33? No, wait. 32. On what? To Die For was 32. You got a 32 on To Die For? And that’s the reason I don’t necessarily look at the score. You can interpret that wrong. The people who are interested in the score, then that’s the score. To them, it’s like high school: “If it’s 32, it’s failing. It’s a failure. That means the movie’s gonna be a failure.” There thinking of it like a grade in college. Their bosses are thinking of it like a grade in college. Their shareholders are thinking of it like a grade in college. And what they do is based on their interpretation of that number. But you can get a score like that if you say, “Here’s a really funny Robin Williams movie. Come to it and laugh!” and then you show them a serious downer Robin Williams movie like One-Hour Photo. They give you a 32 and you say, “What’s wrong?” Like it must be a failure, you know? You didn’t test it right. You can screw the test up. And in the particular case of some tests, it can be that you’re trying to change the profile of the movie. I often make dark comedies. [To Die For] is a dark comedy. The dark comedies tend to be in a non-releasable area. There can be romantic comedies. There can be dramas. But there’s no “dark comedy” inbox for the advertising. So they might test it as a romantic comedy when it’s actually a dark comedy, and as a result you’ll get a low score. You’re saying, “Bring your date! You’re going to get laid on this one!” And then Nicole [Kidman] kills her husband, and the score is D or F because I’m not going to get laid now. And you wonder, “Gee, what went wrong?” And it’s all because you’re trying to make it into something it’s not. Are you ever enlightened at all about your past films by talking about them? Either with fans, or in interviews, or wherever? [Long pause] Yeah, I guess. James Franco is recutting My Own Private Idaho, so I learned something new about that one because I’ve seen the old footage. But I don’t really by talking about them. I like hearing people talk about them; maybe you learn something new about people’s reactions to them. But I don’t necessarily learn about the film. My Own Private Idaho turns 20 this year. What are your reflections two decades later — particularly in light of James Franco’s work revising it? That was the one film — well, in that era, before 2000 — it was the one film that was sort of my own. Some of them, I adapted other people’s books. That was the one I kind of cobbled together with different elements. There was a little bit of Shakespeare in it. It was like this collaged story. So there’s that aspect I like to remember. Do you have a personal relationship with your films over time? Does your impression of them or their memories ever change? No. I mean, they exist as films that other people mention, but there’s no particular relationship.

Watch Michelle Yeoh Assume Power In Luc Besson's Teaser Trailer For The Lady

Of all the features set to premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, only one production resulted in the deportation of its lead. That film is Luc Besson’s biopic The Lady, which stars Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress and Burmese deportee Michelle Yeoh as Suu Kyi, the Nobel Prize winner and Burmese government protester. Finally, a teaser trailer for this controversial picture has surfaced. Besson’s The Lady has been described as an epic love story about how an extraordinary couple and family sacrifice their happiness at great human cost for a higher cause. As previously mentioned, Yeoh stars as Kyi — who was sentenced to over a decade under house arrest because of her political actions — and David Thewlis as her loyal husband Michael Aris. During production, it was reported that Kyi’s house arrest was lifted and Yeoh was able to meet the woman she was portraying onscreen. While The Lady will enjoy a world premiere at this fall’s TIFF, the biopic still does not have a release date. VERDICT: Speech! Speech! [via Yahoo!]

Why Sons of Anarchy Boss Kurt Sutter Quit Twitter

Kurt Sutter Kurt Sutter, the often outspoken creator of Sons of Anarchy, quit Twitter over the weekend, after inciting a slew of headlines with a tweet that blamed Mad Men creator Matt Weiner for demanding so much money out of AMC that they were forced to fire Walking Dead's Frank Darabont as part of budget cutting. Glen Mazzara replaces Frank Darabont as Walking Dead showrunner Last week, Sutter took AMC to task for Darabont's ouster on Twitter, saying Weiner's contract negotiations caused all the turmoil. "Why Darabont got fired - Weiner. He held AMC hostage, broke their bank, budgets were slashed, sh-- rolled down hill onto [Breaking Bad showrunner Vince] Gilligan and Frank. "No one else wants to f---ing say it, but the greed of Mad Men is killing the other two best shows on TV - Breaking Bad and Walking Dead." Sutter later went on to clarify his remarks. "This is not me vs. Matt," he wrote. "The issue is that AMC should not have compromised their other shows to appease his $$ demands. It was bad business." FX sets fall schedule: When will Sons of Anarchy come vrooming back? This isn't Sutter's first tirade on Twitter - back in July, Sutter mocked the out-of-touch Emmy voters for not giving Sons of Anarchy any love - but it does seem to be his last. Sutter's tweets are no longer available after he pulled down his Twitter account. On his blog, Sutter insisted no one chased him off Twitter except himself. "My exit from Twitter was quite simple and, c'mon, let's face it, pretty f---ing obvious -- I'm a guy desperately in need of buffers," he wrote."I have big feelings, big reactions, big emotions. All the things that serve me as an artist, but challenge me as a socially-responsible human being. "I don't regret any tweet, nor do I apologize," he continued. "Everything I said was done in the spirit of social conversation, free speech and was my opinion.Right or wrong, I said it, I own it."

Fraser Leads Escape From Planet Earth

He's part of the new 'toon.... Despite the fact that their last stab at animation with fairytale sequel Hoodwinked Too didn't exactly see money rolling into the company coffers, the Weinstein Company isn't letting that discourage their efforts to compete with the likes of Pixar and DreamWorks, announcing the latest title in their arsenal as Escape from Planet Earth. And they've grabbed up a celebrity cast in the shape of Brendan Fraser, Rob Corddry, Sarah Jessica Parker and more. We're introduced to the planet Baab, where dwells a race of blue-skinned aliens (let's hope they're not trying to catch on to the Avatar bandwagon a few years late, shall we?) The hero of the planet is astronaut Scorch Supernova (Fraser) a daring, square-jawed type who specialises in dangerous rescues and assorted spectacular feats with the help of quieter, nerdier brother Gary (Corddry). But then their boss as BASA, Lena (Jessica Alba) informs them there's an SOS being transmitted from a dangerous other world (you can guess where from the title), Scorch heads off once more, against Gary's better advice, and ends up caught in a trap set by Shanker (James Gandolfini). Now it's Gary's turn to step up and be the hero for once, looking to save everyone including wife Kira (Parker). Yup, sounds like The Kids Today are in for another message about believing in yourself, all wrapped up in 3D eye candy. But the co-writer/director is Cal Brunker, who has worked on the likes of Despicable Me and Horton Hears a Who, so we have a little more hope. Still, the time to judge will be when this one lands in cinemas either next year or in 2013...

Joe + Belle

Produced by Veronica Kedar, Amir Fishman. Directed by Veronica Kedar. Screenplay, Kedar, Stav Davis. With: Sivan Levy, Veronica Kedar, Romi Aboulafia, Yotam Ishay, Irit Gidron, Ra'anan Hefetz. (Hebrew, English, French dialogue)The harder that "Joe + Belle" tries to exert its hipness as a black comedy about two young lesbians accidentally killing people and eluding the law, the greater the strain shows. Israeli director, co-writer and co-star Veronica Kedar tends not to notice when her film's antics are becoming annoying, and displays little aptitude for comic timing. Feeling long at even 80 minutes' running time, pic's local July 31 release will draw little attention despite its uniqueness on the Israeli cinema scene. Fest run will be mild. Joe (Kedar) arrives in Tel Aviv from Bangkok for no particular reason, especially given how she says she doesn't care for the country. She soon encounters Belle (Sivan Levy, overdoing it), just released from a psychiatric hospital and already running away from her mom. Their unlikely courtship, which is never convincingly portrayed by the actors, includes shooting Joe's ex-b.f. Matan (Yotam Ishay) and dumping his body. The chase ensues to Eilat, climaxing with a wan music contest in a bar. Pic's design elements attempt a retro look, but this plus a few political dollops are merely irrelevant bits of business.Camera (color, B&W, HD), Ron Haimov; editor, Daniel Keysary; music, Daphna Keenan; production designer, Marina Gorevich; costume designer, Ofri Barel.
