In the beginning of boondock saints, in the church, people are surprised that the brothers walk forward?

I don't understand why some people look at the brother's weird for
walking forward to pray at jesus's feet during the sermon. Is it
disrespectful? Do they do it out of habit because they aren't
originally from America?
